As a driving instructor one of the most annoying things that happens on driving lessons is when other drivers tailgate-ie they drive dangerously close to the car in front. I can never understand why other drivers do this behind any vehicle but especially behind a learner driver-what do they hope to achieve?-apart from demonstrating their lack of driving ability. Would these people drive really close to a Police car that was sticking to the speed limit-I don't think so! Maybe they like to intimidate learner drivers-what sad lives they must have.

If you find yourself being tailgated there are several things you can do to minimise the danger. The most important thing is not to get angry or flustered by their bad driving. If you have vehicles in front of you, increase the gap ahead of you by gently easing off the accelerator, so if the vehicle in front does brake sharply you will have more room to brake gently, reducing the risk of the fool behind running in to the back of your car. Don't try to teach the other driver a lesson by braking sharply as this may cause the other driver to react aggressively. Don't try and speed up to get away from the driver behind, as they will almost certainly speed up as well making the situation more dangerous. If you feel intimidated by the driver behind the best option will be to find somewhere safe to pull over and let the other driver overtake-let them go and have their accident somewhere else.
